Police have arrested the killer of a four-year-old boy whose strangled body was discovered floating in a pond in Stung Treng province on Sunday.
Siam Bang district police officer Vong Vichetre identified the suspect as Men Nuon, a 43-year-old farmer who was arrested on Tuesday.
He named the victim as Mao Toy, whose body had been packaged into a bag and tossed into a pond in Prek Meas commune.
“The suspect was the person who reported the dead body of the victim to police,” he said.
Mr Vichetre said Ms Nuon confessed that the victim had been playing with her three-year-old son on the day of the murder.
The children had an argument and the victim severely beat the suspect’s son with a stick, then chased him to his house, where he continued attacking the child.
“She said she killed the victim because she was angry at him for chasing after her son and beating him,” the officer said.
“She squeezed his throat until he died, put his body in a bag and threw it in the village pond at night to destroy the evidence.
“She later reported the body to police after his parents and police began searching for him.”
Ms Nuon has been preliminarily charged with murder and faces 10 to 15 years in prison if convicted. She has been sent for questioning at the provincial court.
