A garment worker died and 36 were injured, some seriously, in a crash yesterday as they travelled to work in Phnom Penh.

The accident happened on National Road 3 in Takeo province’s Bati district.

District deputy traffic police chief Chhorn Treoun, said a truck carrying about 40 garment and construction workers were in the accident with another truck carrying a rice grinding machine coming in the opposite direction at 5.20am.

“After I got information about the accident, I went down to the scene and saw a man already dead in the worker’s truck and another two construction workers with cuts to their hands,” he said.

Mr Treoun said both drivers fled, abandoning their trucks and the victims. Workers who were slightly injured returned home or went to hospital.

“Our first conclusion is that the truck carrying workers was in the wrong because the driver drove fast and overtook another truck parked at the roadside without being careful.

“This caused it to hit the truck coming in the opposite direction,” he said.

Mr Treoun said the dead worker and the two with cuts to their hands received their injuries because they put their head and hands outside the truck.

“The workers were also careless when they rode in the truck,” he said.

“If they had not put their head and hands outside, they would not have died and been seriously injured like this because the side of one truck hit the side of the other where the victims were standing.”

Police were seeking the truck drivers to resolve the case.

The Labour Ministry issued a letter yesterday saying all the victims would be helped by the National Social Security Fund.

It said 34 workers were treated in private clinics and another two were in Preah Kosomak hospital in Phnom Penh.

Mr Treoun said only two cases of traffic accidents involving garment workers have happened so far this
year in his district.

Meanwhile, 14 female garment workers were injured on Friday last week in Kampong Cham province’s Cheung Prey district as they travelled from their homes to work.

The NSSF said a loaded truck crashed into the back of the workers’ truck when it was turning into the factory.
