A 16-year-old boy has been charged for having sex with a minor after he and his 12-year-old girlfriend ran away together for a month.
The suspect was charged at Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court and has been detained in prison as investigations into the case continue.
A military police report said the pair ran away from where the girl lived in Banteay Meanchey to the boy’s home town in Kampot province last month.
The mother of the girl contacted her after she disappeared and convinced them to return to her home in Poipet, promising they would not be in trouble.
The boy was arrested when the pair came back as requested.
The girl said she had run away with her boyfriend because she was angry with her mother. She said the couple stayed at a guesthouse in Kampot, where they had sex on multiple occasions.
Provincial court spokesman Sok Keobondith said: “He was charged with having sex with a minor and sent to the provincial prison.”
