A credit officer with a private microfinance company in Phnom Penh was arrested yesterday for stealing more than $10,000 from his company by forging documents.
Meanchey district police officer Long Vibol said Pov Chanleung, 31, chief of community credit with the Ratanak Economic Development Company, was arrested on Monday.
“He was caught by the owner of the company and was sent directly to police,” Mr Vibol said.
“He was accused of breach of trust.
Mr Vibol said Mr Chanleung was sued by Seng Thearin, president of the Ratanak Economic Development Company.
According to the complaint, Mr Chanleung started working as community credit chief in June 2013.
From 2016 until his arrest he stole $11,000 collected from company clients by faking documents.
When the company owner became aware of the thefts last month, Mr Chanleaung admitted responsibility and promised to return the money within a month.
But when the deadline passed, he did not have any money to give back. The owner of company did not trust him and handed him over to police.
