Election overseen by vast security force

Strict security measures will be in place for next month’s commune elections.
 
Interior Minister Sar Kheng, who has special responsibility for supervising security procedures, has issued several guidelines for the army and civil authorities to follow.
 
Among the key instructions is for security personnel “to pay high attention in providing equal security to all political parties standing in the election”.
 
Mr Kheng also ordered extra measures be undertaken to maintain security and public order at all major locations, gathering places, headquarters of political parties standing for election, polling and vote counting stations.
 
According to the National Election Committee, twelve political parties will put up candidates in 1,646 communes in the June 4 poll. They will be seeking the support of 7,865,033 voters at 22,148 polling stations.
 
National Police Chief Neth Savoeun said 37,530 security personnel would be on duty: 35,043 police, 643 military forces and 1,844 from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
