The body of a four-year-old boy was discovered floating in a sack in a pond on Sunday in Stung Treng province.
Vong Vichetre, a Siam Bang district police officer, said an autopsy revealed the boy was strangled dead and also suffered a broken neck.
Mr Vichetre said the boy’s body had been packaged into a bag and tossed into a pond in Prek Meas commune before a group of villagers spotted it.
He identified the victim as Mao Toy, and noted that no suspects have been identified yet.
“According to our investigation, the suspect killed the victim by strangling him and breaking his neck,” Mr Vichetre said. “After killing the victim, the suspect put him in the bag and threw him in a pond to destroy the evidence.”
Siam Bang district police chief Chim En said the initial investigation has led police believe the suspect must have had a grudge against the victim’s parents. But a motive has not yet been pinned down, he added.
“Police are still working hard on this case in order to find the suspect and punish him,” he said.
