The inaugural CLEAR National Futsal Cup 2017 concluded at the weekend with UYFC Komchaymear taking home the grand prize after a 10-6 defeat of Ov Mal FC at the CLEAR Arena in The BLUE Sports Center in Phnom Penh.
Backed by the Football Federation of Cambodia, Futsal, a variation of football played on a much smaller, hard pitch with five-a-side, and mainly indoors, is seen as vital to the development of football among the kingdom’s youth, who often struggle with participation in the larger team variant.
Cambodia’s senior football coach Leonardo Vitorino said late last week that Futsal was among the many initiatives he and the federation backed to get Cambodia’s youth playing more, with more exposure to the ball and improving their close control.
“Futsal is one of those things that will be important for Cambodia as we improve and get better for 2023. It is important as in many countries it is Futsal which players start with, not football,” said the Brazilian.
UYFC Komchaymear were rewarded for winning the inaugural competition with a cheque for almost $5,000. Ov Mal were compensated with almost $2,500.
