A man died yesterday after his homemade rifle malfunctioned while on a wildlife hunt in Ratanakkiri province’s Andoung Meas district.
Sovann Thin, district police chief, identified the victim as Sal Lin, 30, a farmer living in Nhang commune who was hunting wildlife for sale on the illegal market.
Mr Thin said Mr Lin often went into the forests to hunt wildlife to eat and sell. On Wednesday night at about 11pm, his gun malfunctioned when he fired it and left him with serious injuries to his armpit and back.
“According to our investigation, the victim took his homemade gun and fired at wildlife. But because the gun had got wet by rain, it exploded as he fired and caused serious injuries to him.”
Mr Thin said Mr Lin was taken to hospital for treatment, but died of his injuries yesterday morning.
He added that the victim’s body has been brought to his family for a funeral at his home.
