Preah Sihanouk provincial court yesterday charged a Chinese national with attempted murder over the vicious beating of a business associate as he attempted to recoup a loan.
Bun Sopheak, a Preah Sihanouk provincial police officer, identified the accused as Fang Jian Hua, 37, and noted he had been charged with attempted murder for beating Lin Yongfei, 38, with a steel pipe.
Mr Sopheak said the accused was arrested on Saturday following a complaint filed by the victim.
Mr Sopheak said that in July 2017, the suspect borrowed $2,100 from the victim for refurbishment of a restaurant.
Since then, the victim had been attempting to recoup his money and on Saturday visited the accused at his rental apartment.
Mr Sopheak said the accused got angry and beat the victim with a steel pipe on his head, causing serious injuries.
“He was angry at the victim for always asking for the money and disturbing him,” he said. “He took a piece of steel and attacked the victim’s head.
“After beating the victim, he fled but was later arrested by our local police in accordance with the victim’s complaint.”
The accused has been placed in pretrial detention.
