Villagers living near the O’Khai Don reservoir in Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet town have been warned to brace for floods as water continues to flow over the Thai border.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology said water from Thailand had caused the level of the reservoir to increase to 4.68 metres on Monday night. The warning level is 4.60m.

“Citizens living near the O’Khai Don reservoir must be careful,” the ministry said.

The ministry meanwhile issued a weather warning for the whole country, saying the capital and the majority of provinces are likely to face heavy rain and floods for a week from Friday.

Nhim Vanda, vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said last week that at least 70 people died and more than 100 people were injured due to natural disasters in the first nine months of this year.

He said there were 159 natural disasters during the timeframe, in which at least six people were killed when houses or trees fell on them. Another 70 people were killed by lightning strikes.
