Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced a 17-year-old boy to six years in jail for strangling dead a 16-year-old girl during a robbery in May.
Presiding judge Bun Thy said Yung Odoum killed Mann Sreymom on May 25 after breaking into her home in Chroy Changvar district’s Chroy Changvar commune to steal her property.
“The court orders him to pay 30 million riel [about $7,500] to the mother of the victim,” said judge Thy.
Ek Sereyvuth, Russey Keo deputy district police chief, said Mr Odoum broke into the victim’s home at around 7.30pm to rob her while she was home alone.
“He killed the victim by squeezing her throat,” he said. “After killing her, he stole her iPhone, gold necklace and gold rings before fleeing.”
Mr Sereyvuth said Mr Odoum later fled to Kampong Cham province, where he was arrested on May 27.
During his trial, Mr Odoum said he carried out the brutal robbery to feed a drug habit.
“The reason I killed her was because she knew me well,” he testified. “If I did not kill her, I was afraid she would tell police about the robbery.”
