Mondulkiri military police and the provincial court prosecutor on Saturday morning stopped a Vietnamese bus hiding more than half a cubic metre of timber probably heading for Vietnam.
National military police spokesman Eng Hy wrote on his Facebook page to say that the bus was stopped in Sen Monorom town.
Mr Hy said 46 pieces of timber, equivalent to 0.587 cubic metres, were stashed on the bus.
Morm Vanda, spokesman for the provincial court, said two people were arrested in the operation.
“We sent them to the provincial forestry administration and we are questioning them. We got information from experts. The wood is luxury timber,” he said.
Authorities were not certain about the nationality of the arrested pair.
“We suspected they are Vietnamese, but they can speak Khmer clearly. We are looking into their nationality as well as their legal status,” he said.
Mr Vanda said the bus was stopped at an intersection in the provincial town that leads to the border checkpoint to Vietnam, raising suspicion that Vietnam was the destination for the wood.
