Chinese and Indonesians arrested over VOIP scam

Immigration police arrested 91 Chinese and Indonesian nationals in Preah Sihanouk province yesterday over suspicion they were operating telecom scams to extort money from victims.

Lieutenant General Uk Heisela, chief of investigations at the Interior Ministry’s general department of immigration, said that seven Indonesians and 84 Chinese were arrested in commune three.

“We are preparing to send them to Phnom Penh for questioning,” Lt Gen Heisela said.

He added that hundreds of computers and phones were confiscated during the operation.

Authorities have in the past few months arrested and deported hundreds of Chinese nationals using VOIP to extort money from their compatriots in China.
