A 20-year-old Lao woman was arrested on Monday afternoon for stabbing a 51-year-old moto driver and allegedly attempting to steal his bike.

However, tourist Phan Sina denied trying to steal the bike and said she stabbled Oum Ny, from Banlong district, when he tried to rape her.

The incident took place in Bong Village in Ratanakkiri province’s Voeun Sai district.

Deputy district police chief Veng Sokhom said Mr Ny was driving Ms Sina from Banlong district to Voeun Sai district when the incident took place.

“The victim said the suspect, who was sitting behind him, took a sharp knife and stabbed him in the neck several times in an attempt to steal his motorbike,” Mr Sokhom said.

“He pushed her on to the ground and drove to the police station. The suspect was later arrested by police in Bong commune.”

However, a provincial police officer said Ms Sina denied attempting to steal the motorbike.

“During interrogation, she said the reason she stabbed the victim was because he attempted to rape her while driving through a quiet area,” he said. “She said she stabbed him in self-defence.”

Mr Sokhom said police confiscated a sharp vegetable knife from Ms Sina when she was arrested.

She has been detained for further questioning at provincial police headquarters and was preliminarily accused of attempted murder, which carries a possible sentence of 10 to 15 years imprisonment.
