Dear Khmer Times’ readers,
On the occasion of the 68th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, I wish, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Cambodia, to extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all Chinese nationals and overseas Chinese in Cambodia. I also wish to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our friends in Cambodia who have long cherished and supported the fraternal relations between China and Cambodia.
During the past 68 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, especially since the reform and opening up nearly 40 years ago, China has made tremendous achievements in development, and has become the second largest economy in the world. What we achieved most is that we have found a development path that best suits our national conditions, namely the Path of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China with President Xi Jinping as the core, the Chinese people are striving for achieving the Chinese Dream of the great renewal of the Chinese nation. We are ready and capable of making greater contributions to the peace and development endeavors for humankind.
China and Cambodia are good neighbours, good brothers, good friends and good partners. The China-Cambodia friendship, jointly forged and carefully nurtured by King Father Norodom Sihanouk and older generations of Chinese leaders, has withstood the test of time and international vicissitudes, and grown even stronger and deeper into people’s hearts.
Facing the new situation in the new era, the China-Cambodia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation has been developing with new vitality and strong momentum. H.E. President Xi Jinping paid a successful state visit to Cambodia in October 2016, during which the leaders of the two countries reached important consensus on further consolidating the China-Cambodia traditional friendship and strengthening cooperation in all fields. Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen visited China and attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in May 2017, during which fruitful results were gained. Our political mutual trust is deepening, development strategies are aligning at a faster pace, and culture and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation is ever closer. The number of Chinese tourists to Cambodia reached 530,000 in the first half of this year with a year-on-year growth of 39.9 percent, ranking the first among international tourists to Cambodia. Up to now, 12 Chinese airline companies opened up 15 airlines with 35 flights travelling daily between the two countries. The number of exchange students and the scale of personnel training between China and Cambodia are also expanding. More than 2000 Cambodian students have been enrolled to Chinese universities with Chinese government scholarships.
The total mileage of highway constructed in Cambodia by the Chinese side with concessional loans has reached 2,669 km, accounting for 35 percent of the total mileage of the national highways in Cambodia. Chinese enterprises have built in Cambodia 7 large bridges, 7 hydropower stations and 1 power plant, as well as more than 12,000 kilometers of fiber optic network and the first international undersea fiber optic cable in Cambodia. This year, the China-funded Cambodian National Stadium has begun construction, and the 100 buses donated by the Chinese side are running through the boulevards and streets of Phnom Penh. To help Cambodia accelerate development and improve people’s livelihood, the Chinese government will help Cambodia build hundreds of kilometers of rural roads and thousands of
wells for healthy drinking water, as well as provide 40 mobile clinics with grant (aid gratis) in the near future.
As traditional friendly neighbours and comprehensive strategic partners, China will firmly support Cambodia to uphold national independence and follow the development path that suits its national conditions. Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Cambodia. We would like to take this opportunity to work in concerted efforts with the Cambodian side, to push the bilateral relations to a new high and better benefit the two peoples.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Cambodia
