Two tourists were arrested on Saturday by Phnom Penh police for using fake ATM cards to withdraw money from a microfinance bank.

Sok Vibol, deputy chief of the minor crimes office, said Thana Rak, 30, from Sri Lanka, and Thandhra Kanthy, 30, from India, were arrested while performing a transaction in Chakarmon district at about 2am.

“They were arrested in accordance with complaints from owners of the banks’ ATM machines in the city,” he said.

“They were arrested red-handed while they were using the fake ATM cards to withdraw money from a local microfinance bank.” Mr Vibol added that Phnom Penh Municipal Court later charged the pair with theft.

After their arrest, police confiscated $1,500 as well as numerous fake ATM cards, he said.

Mr Vibol said police believed others were involved in the scheme and were looking to make further arrests.
