A government official has defended Hun Manet’s ongoing European tour after he was met by protesters during a trip to Germany last week.

Lieutenant General Manet is visiting a number of European countries to meet Cambodians who live there.

Spokesman for the Council of Ministers Phay Siphan accused protesters aligned with the opposition CNRP for attempting to disrupt his trip.

“Their opposition to his mission is brutal and uncivilised for people living in a democratic society,” he said. He added that Lt Gen Manet is a special envoy of peace and reconciliation.

“His Excellency Hun Manet’s intention is to build relations with those who have the same blood line as Cambodian people,” Mr Siphan said.  Lt Gen Manet has been met with protests on previous trips abroad, including last year when he visited the US.

Mr Manet met about 200 Cambodian people in Switzerland on Sunday. He is also due to hold meetings with officials at the French Defence Ministry in Paris this week.
