A new international border gate will officially open on October 1 in Battambang province’s Sampov Loun district to buttress the Daung International Checkpoint in Kamrieng district.

A Sampov Loun police officer said the new checkpoint will replace a popular illegal crossing into Thailand, where hundreds of migrant workers enter the country illegally.

The officer said the new checkpoint is aimed at curbing the illegal crossings.

Khim Tip Muny, chief of the checkpoint office, said the border gate will be inaugurated early next month.

“In accordance with the agreement between the government of the two countries, the Battambang provincial authority of Cambodia and Sakeo province of Thailand agreed to schedule October 1, 2017 as the day for official opening of Phnom Dey International Border Checkpoint,” he said in a statement.
