A 48-year-old military officer with the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces was arrested on Wednesday in Kandal province’s Koh Thom district over the beating of his wife and stepdaughter.
District police chief Mom Chantha identified the suspect as Captain Chhem Ham, an officer on the Koh Thom district military base.
Mr Chantha said Cap Ham was a known drunkard, who routinely abused his wife after bouts of drinking.
He said that on Wednesday, Cap Hem returned home from a morning of drinking rice wine and ordered his wife, Yim Mach, 47, to prepare him lunch, because it was not ready upon his arrival.
“He was angry at his wife for not cooking meals for him to eat on time,” said Mr Chantha. “So he beat her. While beating her, the wife’s 22-year-daughter heard her mother crying and tried to intervene. He then beat the daughter, too, injuring them both.”
“After beating them, he threatened to kill them,” he added.
Mr Chantha said that after the beatings, the two victims filed a complaint with the district police because they feared for their lives. The suspect was later arrested by police.
The suspect will be sent to Kandal Provincial Court today.
