Japan has pledged to help strengthen Cambodia’s capacity in military technology, Defence Minister Tea Banh says.

Speaking yesterday ahead of his visit to Japan for the 9th Japan-Asean Defence Vice-Ministerial Forum, Gen Banh said he would meet his Japanese counterpart Itsunori Onodera to discuss the issue.

“The most important technology will be for the engineering sector and mine clearance,” he said.

“The main topic will be how to keep stability and peace throughout Asia-Pacific,” Gen Banh said, warning that all Asean leaders needed to prevent civil wars.

“We want to strengthen peace not only in our country, but also in our neighbouring countries.”

Gen Banh pointed out that the forum was also a chance for Cambodia to explain how it was trying to strengthen peace and stability in the country.

Cambodia and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1953.

Since 2002, the Japanese government has provided more than $26 million for 95 projects in the kingdom, mainly for primary education, heath, agriculture and mine clearance. Trade between Cambodia and Japan reached $1.3 billion last year.
