A Chinese man was jailed for 15 years yesterday for shooting dead a Cambodian security guard and injuring a military officer after robbing a fellow Chinese businessman.

Chao Give, 40, carried out the robbery at a stationery shop in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district last year. Hang Bunted, 41, who also took part in the robbery, is at large. He was convicted in absentia and jailed also for 15 years.

Top Chhunheng, presiding judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said the pair were charged with theft under aggravating circumstances and intentional murder.

District police chief Yim Sarann said that on the afternoon of November 6 last year, the pair covered their faces with masks and carried a pistol into the shop near Phnom Penh International Airport.

After the robbery, the pair shot dead military officer Yen Rinong, 23, who was working as a security guard, and injured another military officer, Yi Sok Heng, 26. They then fled into forest in nearby Chom Chao commune.

Mr Sarann said Mr Chao was arrested by district police on November 9.

Shop owner Lou Bai Heng said the robbers took $500 and a gold necklace worth about $1,500.
