National Road 3 is to be widened to four lanes under a government development scheme financed by a Chinese loan.

Speaking yesterday in a meeting with garment workers at Vattanac Industrial Park II, which is on National Road 3, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the upgrade would boost economic growth in the country.

The road is currently only nine metres wide. After the expansion, two thirds of the thoroughfare will have four lanes, while the remainder will be increased to 12 metres wide.

The prime minister told workers the expansion was part of a government plan to improve infrastructure links to sea ports.

There were many factories along the road, which required good transport links to send the goods they produced abroad.

“We must implement this project to improve road transport,” he said.

The Public Works and Transport Ministry confirmed in July that it was studying the possible expansion of National Road 3 with the China Road and Bridge Corporation.

The road runs from Phnom Penh’s Choam Chao roundabout to Kampot city.

The four-lane section will start from Choam Chao roundabout and run to Takeo’s Bek Kous, at the intersection with National Road 31.

Public Works Ministry spokesman Vasim Soriya said the development work would begin with a 70km stretch of road.

During the meeting with garment workers, Mr Hun Sen called for measures to improve their livelihoods, including the freezing of property rental prices for one year in 2018.
