edotco brings telecommunications industry experts together at International Infrastructure Summit in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, 28 August 2017edotco Group (“edotco”), a regional leader in integrated telecommunications infrastructure services with operations in Southeast Asia and South Asia, brought together key experts in the telecommunications industry to discuss the development of Cambodia’s ICT Masterplan 2020 at its International Infrastructure Summit on Monday.

Government officials, business leaders and experts in telecommunications and infrastructure gathered at this one-day summit to engage on issues and opportunities surrounding tower sharing, telecom regulations and licensing frameworks in Cambodia.   

H.E. Tram Iv Tek, Cambodia’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, opened the summit with an address on the current up and coming telecommunications environment in Cambodia.  In his address, he spoke about Cambodia’s ambitions to be digitally connected by 2020 and recognised the crucial role of public private partnerships in achieving ICT readiness.

“Summits like these bring together leading figures and key players in the industry creating the dialogue that is necessary to realise Cambodia’s ICT vision. The government hopes to have 100 percent broadband coverage in urban areas and 70 percent coverage in rural areas by 2020, and actively partnering with the specialist infrastructure companies is key to ensuring we are on track” he said.”edotco’s initiatives in bringing connectivity through telecom infrastructure and innovative solutions supports Cambodia’s vision to revolutionise the country’s ICT sector and I thank them for leading the charge on these vital discussions” he said.

A key feature of the summit were  panel discussions on the ICT Connectedness and Readiness for Cambodia and the investors’ view on infrastructure investments, which included H.E. Dr. Kan Channmeta, Secretary of State of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Thomas Hundt, CEO of Smart Axiata,  Patrick Tangney, Vice Chairman of Irrawaddy Towers, Carlos Katsuya, Chief Investment Officer and Head of Telecom, Media & Technology, Asia, Europe and MENA of IFC, Sachin Gupta, Managing Director of New Street Capital Asia and Suresh Sidhu, CEO of edotco Group as panellists.

With a steady 7.0 percent GDP growth, Cambodia is one of Asia’s fastest growing economies and is ripe for an ICT revolution. With 7.2 million internet subscribers and nearly 20 million telephone subscribers, the fixed broadband market currently presents  huge opportunity for development as mobile broadband penetration is forecasted for continued strong growth.

edotco Cambodia was established in May 2012 with just only five employees and 150 tenancies. Since then, edotco has seen tremendous growth in its headcount and tower count. In 2015, edotco’s tower count in Cambodia grew to 1,800 towers after it acquired tower assets from Smart Axiata. To date, edotco Cambodia has 25 employees and 3,500 tenancies, spread across major network operators such as Smart Axiata, Seatel, Xinwei, CamGSM and Emaxx.

The first edotco-hosted International Infrastructure Summit was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2015 and there are plans to host this event in different countries on a biannual basis.
