An ancient statue of a woman was found buried in Prey Veng province’s Preah Sdach district on Friday.
Officials are yet to date the artefact, but the grey sandstone piece stands 60cm high and is in good condition.
A Preah Sdach district police officer who declined to be named confirmed yesterday that a villager found the statue when they were excavating land with a digger.
He added that the owner of the land where the statue was found, Seang Neng, 52, wanted to keep the artefact at Brasat Mongkol pagoda in Kampong Seung commune’s Tamao village.
Kampong Seung commune chief Sam Hun confirmed the find but declined to comment further.
Provincial Culture and Fine Arts officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
