Dear readers of Khmer Times,
The month of August 2017 represents a milestone for the Philippines and Cambodia for several reasons. On this month, both countries commemorate 60 years of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations, as well as the 50th anniversary of the founding of Asean, the fulcrum of political, economic and cultural cooperation in our region, of which both Cambodia and the Philippines are members.
The Philippines is likewise proud to formally inaugurate the permanent chancery of the Philippine Embassy located at 182 Norodom Boulevard – a symbol of my country’s commitment to further strengthen its strong ties of friendship with Cambodia and its peoples.
Sixty years hence, our nations’ leaders continue to work towards ensuring that bilateral relations between our two countries remain warm and vibrant. Barely six months after assuming office, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte successfully concluded a historic State Visit to Cambodia in December 2016.
Five months later, President Duterte returned to Phnom Penh for the World Economic Forum on Asean, as one of the keynote speakers with the message that the young citizens of Asean must be empowered to be the best versions of themselves. On the other hand, Prime Minister Hun Sen visited Manila in April 2017 to attend the 30th Asean Summit, under the chairmanship of the Philippines.
All of these interactions at the highest official level fostered productive dialogue towards cooperation and partnership between our two countries in the fields of security, trade and investments, agriculture, labour, tourism, culture, sports and people-to-people relations.
I hope that as you read this supplement, you will discover the Philippines as an economic hotspot, a nation of friendly people, and a country with 7,641 reasons (as represented by number of islands in the archipelago) to visit. Maraming Salamat and Som Orkhun!!!
