Kandal police officer Duong Piseth said Mr Cheang had called the victim’s family and demanded a $5,000 ransom for their relative.

The family filed a complaint to the Interior Ministry’s penal police department, which led to the arrest of the suspect and the rescue of the victim.

Mr Piseth said the suspect had been temporarily detained at Kandal police headquarters for questioning. He would appear at the provincial court today.
