A 29-year-old-man was charged yesterday with disguising himself as a military bodyguard of Prime Minister Hun Sen and using a weapon without permission.

Kan Kimheng, 29, was arrested on Sunday in Kandal province’s Lovear Em district.

District deputy police chief Duong Samnang said Mr Kimheng wore military trousers and a civilian shirt with a prime minister’s bodyguard cap.

He had a pistol and a police radio on his waist.  He drove an expensive motorbike through a police checkpoint in Areyaksath commune.

Police were suspicious and stopped him. He told them he was an officer working with Mr Hun Sen’s Bodyguard Command.

Police asked him to show his bodyguard officer ID card and related documents but he did not have them. Police then arrested him.

Mr Kimheng was yesterday charged by the prosecutor of Kandal Provincial Court with illegal use of a weapon and unlawful use of a costume designated for public authorities.

He has been detained while awaiting trial and faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
