A raid on Monday of a woman’s house in Prey Veng province turned up hundreds of animals, dead and alive, set to be sold in the illegal wildlife trade.
Chief of Peamro distric police Sun Vantha said Peamro police officials cooperated with the Forestry Department and the National Military Police to raid the house of Dang Kimngang, 36, who was suspected of selling many types of wildlife in Prek Khsay Kor commune.
“The Forestry Department seized 332 animals, including 17 turtles, 60 small turtle-doves, 203 birds, and other types of wildlife,” Mr Vantha said.
Mr Vantha reported 16 of the turtles were still alive, but many other animals had been killed. Their bodies were burned, and the turtles set free at a lake in the province.
“The Forestry Department officials did not arrest the woman, but they prepared a document to be sent to the court,” he said.
He did not know the reason why the woman was not arrested.
