A military police officer in Kampong Speu province is being investigated by his own unit after beating two siblings unconscious because they had an argument with his son in Phnom Srouch district.

According to a report from the district police chief to the provincial police, In Reaksmey, a security officer with the military police, gathered a few of his friends to beat Hai Kimsun, 32, and Hai Sopheak, 17, because the two brothers had been arguing with his son.

Contacted by the phone, district police chief Say Bunthon said that the case has garnered a lot of attention, but is now out of his hands because the district governor has allowed the military police to take over the investigation.

“He [Mr Reaksmey] has not been arrested and he is still working as usual,” said Mr Bunthon. “The [Treng Trayoeng] commune police chief also reported to me that the victims’ family complained about that. But now, the district governor assigned the military police to work on this case.”

District military police chief Yos Dina declined to comment, saying he was too busy bringing his son to the capital for the national exam and referring questions to his superiors.

Som Samon, deputy provincial military police commander, said that a settlement is ongoing between the victims and Mr Reaksmey, and vowed to take action against Mr Reaksmey according to the unit’s internal rules.

“I heard that the settlement between the two parties is ongoing, so I cannot confirm details about that now,” he said. “However, the offender will be punished according to unit rules if we determine that what he did was wrong.”

Mr Reaksmey could not be reached for comment.
