A man was killed by a landmine yesterday while searching for wood and vegetables in a mountainous area in Oddar Meanchey’s Kon Kriel commune.
Phat Kim, Kon Kriel commune police chief, identified the victim as Seng Sroeun, 53.
“The landmine exploded and he was injured and sent to the hospital, but now he has died. His left leg was cut off,” he said.
Mr Kim said that the explosion occurred near the border between Cambodia and Thailand.
“There are a lot of landmines there leftover from the war and they were never removed to protect the border,” he said.
In a separate case, a mother and daughter were burnt when they used part of a landmine to support their cooker on Wednesday in Mondulkiri’s Koh Nhek district.
Khlot Sokhea, district police chief, said the pair were cooking noodles, using two rocks and part of a landmine to support their cooker.
He identified the victims as Bour Bourkhai, 30, and Set Samet, 13.
“The landmine part exploded, slightly burning their legs and faces.”
