Police in Poipet town are hunting a suspect who allegedly detained a Chinese man in a room over an unpaid gambling debt.

Poipet commune police chief Im Sophearak said the victim, Chan Shun, 60, came to Cambodia last month.

Mr Chan lost money at a casino and alleged that the suspect lent him $2,000 to keep playing but he lost the loan as well.

The suspect detained Mr Chan in a room while he demanded money from the victim’s family, but Mr Chan was able to escape and file a complaint with police.

Mr Sophearak said police are investigating because they only have the victim’s version of events.

The officer added that there were many cases in the town of  gamblers losing money and having problems with people from whom they borrowed money.
