Cambodia’s football team has suffered a second straight defeat at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, the latest loss a 4-1 thumping courtesy of Vietnam at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday.
Vietnam scored courtesy of a Nguyen Cong Phuong double, then had two more through Quang Hai and Ho Tuan Tai.
Sothearoth Nen scored a late consolation goal for Cambodia.
After Cambodia kept the opposition at bay early on in the game, Vietnam took the lead just before the half-time break after Nguyen Cong Phuong beat goalkeeper Um Sereirath to edge his side ahead before the break.
Vietnam continued where they left off in the second half, as Cambodia struggled to show any attacking threat going forward.
In the 72nd minute, Vietnam made it 2-0 from a free-kick by Quang Hai. They added a third in the 75th minute when Cong Phuong grabbed his second of the match from yet another free kick.
Vietnam were not done yet as they scored again through Ho Tuan Tai, who slotted home after receiving the ball from the irrepressible Cong Phuong. By that stage, Vietnam, four goals up, were coasting to victory.
Cambodia were able to keep the score respectable when Sothearoth Nen pulled a goal back from an 83rd minute penalty.
The win, Vietnam’s second, sees them top group B with maximum points. Cambodia wallow at the bottom in fifth with no points from two outings.
They will meet competition favourites and defending champions Thailand on Sunday.
