Policeman Disarmed

A police officer was arrested and charged by the Koh Kong Provincial Court for allegedly breaking into a police warehouse and stealing weapons to pay a gambling debt, according to police yesterday.
 
The theft occurred at the weapons warehouse belonging to provincial border police protection unit 827 in Thmey village in Mondol Seima district’s Pak Khlorng commune on Thursday at 11:30pm.  
 
Sok Sokha, a provincial penal police officer, said the suspect was 35-year-old Second Lieutenant Sok Phanha, who was on duty guarding the warehouse when he broke in and stole weapons, allegedly to sell to pay off a gambling debt.  
 
“He lost at the casino. He then had the idea to steal the weapons from the warehouse to sell,” he told Khmer Times yesterday by telephone.
 
“He was arrested after he broke the warehouse’s door and attempted to steal the guns.”
 
He said the suspect’s activities were witnessed by district police forces who had been deployed nearby that evening and immediately arrested him.  
 
He added that the suspect was charged on Monday with “attempted theft with aggravating circumstances” and has now has been sent to the provincial prison.
