A Kampong Speu province farmer was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for circulating $20,000 in counterfeit banknotes, an officer said yesterday.
Military police officer Oum Vireak said Pauk Pong, 56, of Kanthoam Village, was arrested after trying to flee on his motorbike.
Mr Vireak said the chase lasted 20 minutes before the suspect was apprehended.
“He was arrested after local military police have suspected him of circulating counterfeit money, inspected his bag and found fake banknotes,” said Mr Vireak. Police found a total of $20,000 in $100 banknotes on him.
Mr Pong is being temporarily detained at Kampong Speu police headquarters before being sent to Kampong Speu provincial court for questioning on Friday.
He faces five to 10 years in prison if convicted.
