Thai police have arrested a Cambodian man for crossing the border to steal fruit and have refused to release him to Cambodian authorities for punishment in-country.
Noeun, 35, crossed into the Thai territory of Pong Nam Ron district from Boeung Raing commune on Sunday to collect rambutan fruit, according to a National Police report.
Thai authorities caught him and detained him at their district police station. When the border police unit 819 requested he be extradited back to Cambodia to face punishment here, Thai authorities refused, the report added.
Sen Sophan, police chief of Boeung Raing commune, said that the suspect was caught red-handed stealing the fruit and although he’d like to see him sent back to Cambodia, it is the right of Thai authorities to dish out the punishment in their country.
“It is the right of the Thai police to punish him in their country because the crime was committed inside their country,” he said, adding there was not much else Cambodian border or commune police could do to help the man.
Border police officials could not be reached for comment.
Daung International Border checkpoint official Ngin Linazano said that his unit was not informed of the case.
