Military police have arrested a local journalist and a goldsmith for inciting villagers to attack a security guard of an agricultural company and destroy its properties in Kampot province’s Chhuk district.
Techor Aphiwat commune police chief Moa Mardy identified the suspects as Chea Sitha, 46, a reporter for People Power newspaper, and Sok Pisey, 52, a goldsmith in the commune.
“The arrests were made after the suspects incited about 60 villagers to beat a security guard of the company and also destroy three pickup trucks at cashew fields being planted by the Chan Sothea Company,” Mr Mardy said.
Mr Mardy said the villagers had come from different provinces after being incited to grab the land, which has been given to the company as an Economic Land Concession.
He added that villagers have also begun building shelters on the land.
“Mr Sitha and Mr Pisey encouraged villagers to fight with the company,” said Mr Mardy.
He added that the pair remains at the provincial military police station for questioning.
