Cambodia will send about 1,000 domestic workers to Hong Kong by the end of the year, the Ministry of Labour announced yesterday.

The first group will travel in September after the ministry approved six employment agencies to arrange jobs for them.

“We will try our best to send our first group to work as domestic helpers in Hong Kong in September, but it also depends on if our citizens want to work over there or not,” Labour Minister Ith Samheng said.

Mr Samheng said Hong Kong has guaranteed safe, humane and well paying positions, a $550 monthly salary, meals and free accommodation.

“We do not know how many of our domestic workers will eventually go to Hong Kong, but we expect to send about 1,000 domestic helpers by the end of this year,” said Mr Samheng.

“We cannot force someone to go to work in Hong Kong, but if anyone is interested in this job, they can contact the six recruitment companies.”

The aproved agencies are: Top Manpower, Anny Rita Best Manpower; Elite Manpower Agency, Sok Leap Metrey, Ung Rithy Group and Win Win Manpower Service

Ung Seang Rithy, chairwoman of Ung Rithy Group, said the Labour Ministry can trust her company to prepare and send workers abroad.

“We have to train the domestic workers for 600 hours before sending them to Hong Kong by focusing on cooking, the Cantonese or English language, cultural norms, healthcare and caring for children,” she said.

Ms Seang Rithy said more than one dozen workers had already applied to take part in her company’s training program.
