A 30-year-old military police officer was arrested yesterday over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend at a guesthouse.

Major Ou Sopha was arrested in Pailin province on the Cambodian-Thai Border before being transferred to the National Military Police headquarters in Phnom Penh for questioning.

National Military Police officer Ly Kosal said that on the night of December 10, Major Ou Sopha brought his girlfriend, a 20-year-old karaoke girl, to the guesthouse in Russey Keo district in Phnom Penh.

After a jealous argument, he shot her in the head, causing her immediate death and fled.

“He was charged in absentia by a municipal court prosecutor with intentional murder,” Mr Kosal said.

The suspect is temporarily detained at the police headquarters before being sent to Phnom Penh’s Municipal Court today.

He faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
