The Education Minister yesterday issued a letter to all provincial governors requesting that they ensure guesthouses and hotels do not increase their prices during national exam time, when hundreds of students flood into towns from their rural homes.
According to the letter signed by Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron, the national Grade 12 exam is set for August 21 and 22.
“All examination centres are in provincial towns,” he wrote in the letter.
“All students who have to take the exam, and also their parents or guardians, will gather in the towns.”
Mr Chuon Naron said that to help those students who come from poor families, the ministry requested that hotels and guesthouses do not increase prices during the examination days.
San Chey, executive director of the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability Cambodia, said yesterday that he has made the same appeal in past years, before the minister took his post and is glad the request is now coming from a government official.
“I think the authorities have to coordinate with the hotels and guesthouses to keep the same prices, or even reduce them for students during their exam days,” he said.
For this year’s exam, there are 103,112 students and 178 exam centres. The results of the tests will be announced on September 12 for Phnom Penh and Kandal province and on September 13 for the rest of the country.
The number of candidates has increased by almost 10,000 compared with last year, when 93,752 students sat for test.
