Pagoda Gas Thief Nabbed

Pav Suy / Khmer Times Share:

One of two suspects involved in the theft of gasoline from the Kampong Trea pagoda in Prey Veng province was arrested after trying to escape on Wednesday night, according to local police.
Sun Tha, the police chief of Mesar Prachan commune, brushed aside local media reports saying the two suspects had been injured after being beaten by villagers. He attributed one suspect’s injury to accidentally hitting his head on the beam of a house while trying to escape from villagers.
The second suspect, he said, fled the scene on a motorcycle.
“They stole two 30-liter plastic containers of gas. At the time, the monks and priests were not there because they had gone to a ceremony. They took the gas through the back gate,” he said.
“When they were spotted, they attempted to flee on a motorcycle, leaving the gas behind, and the passenger at the back ran and hit the house’s beam. The people did not beat him, but he ran into the beam of a house.
“Actually, the people were about to beat him, but because he was bleeding, they told the police,” said Mr. Tha.
The police chief identified the suspect only as Long. He said the suspect was mentally unstable and that monks had asked police not to punish him.
“He is from Reap commune in Pearaing district. He is not mentally fit and the monks at the pagoda asked us not to punish him and bring him to the hospital instead to treat his injury and send him back to his family.
“We already sent him to the hospital because the injury was serious. For the suspect who fled, we are still looking for him,” he added.
