Two men have been detained over allegations they cleared 20 hectares of state forest in Kampong Thom’s Santuk district on Tuesday.
Krayea commune police chief Ly Pithou said the suspects were caught by forestry administration and military officials.
“It happened somewhere near Dey Sar Road, which is a remote area. The forestry administration always tries to crack down on forestry crimes in that place, in cooperation with the military,” he said.
Krayea commune forestry administration chief Chheang Mealea said the duo was caught red-handed.
“We caught them clearing the forest to invade state land. We confiscated one axe, one chainsaw, one motorbike and one homemade tractor,” he said.
Mr Mealea said the operation followed a report of the illegal activity from local people.
“They had cleared twenty hectares. The people reported it to us and we went to the area to arrest them,” he said.
The duo was being questioned at the forestry administration office, he added.
