A 27-year-old-man in Siem Reap province was yesterday charged with intentional murder after hacking his father to death with a machete on Tuesday.
Nuon Sakchamroeun, deputy police chief of Siem Reap city, said the murder occurred in Svay Dangkum commune soon after midnight on Tuesday.
Mr Sakchamroeun identified the man charged as Chhoeun Sambath, 27, a construction worker who allegedly killed his father, Chhoeun Chhoeum, 66, with a machete as he slept.
“He was angry at his father for always scolding and cursing him over his wine-drinking habit,” said Mr Sakchamroeun. “He took the machete and hacked his father’s neck many times while he was sleeping, killing him on the spot.”
“After killing his father, he managed to flee from the area, but was later arrested by our local police,” Mr Sakchamroeun added.
Commune police officer Bun Kosal said the suspect was drinking with his friends on Monday night in front of his home.
The group of friends became rowdy, Mr Kosal said, and the suspect’s father came outside to tell them to quiet down and go to sleep.
The father went back to sleep and his son later attacked him with the machete after his friends went home, Mr Kosal said.
