A 30-year-old Phnong ethnic farmer has confessed to police that he shot an alleged sorcerer in anger, thinking the man had made villagers sick.
Nhin Kle of Khlorng Le village in Mondulkiri province was arrested on Tuesday.
Broeum Dy, 37, also a Phnong farmer, was shot in the head and severely injured as he slept at home on Friday of last week.
Kang Bunthoeun, an officer with the provincial major crimes unit, said Mr Kle told police he carried out the shooting.
“He said he shot the victim because he was angry at him for using sorcery to cause people to become sick in the village,” Mr Bunthoeun said.
“He said the victim was a sorcerer.”
After his arrest, police seized an AK-47 rifle along with a number of bullets from the suspect’s house.
Mr Bunthoeun said Mr Kle was preliminarily charged with attempted murder and unauthorised possession of a weapon. He was being held for further investigation at the provincial police headquarters.
The victim remains seriously ill in Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh.
