A 37-year-old farmer was shot and seriously injured as he slept after villagers among his Phnong ethnic minority accused him of making people sick by sorcery.
The attempted murder took place in his house on his farm in Khlorng Le village in Mondulkiri province’s Koh Nhek district on Friday.
District police chief Khloth Sokhea said Broeum Dy was shot once on the right side of his head while he was sleeping alone. Mr Dy has been sent to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh.
“After the shooting, the offender probably thought the victim was dead, so he fled with the gun,” Mr Sokhea said.
Neighbours who heard the shooting went to Mr Dy’s house and found him badly injured in a pool of blood. They then called police.
Song Phleang, deputy chief of the district penal police, said the shooting was a case of revenge because the victim was well known to villagers as a sorcerer.
He said many villagers had become sick recently for no apparent reason. Villagers believed the victim had cast a spell on them and made them ill.
Police believe the offender lives in the same village but have not yet identified a suspect.
