A 61-year-old Syrian woman is due in Phnom Penh Municipal Court today following her arrest on Wednesday night for allegedly stealing $500 from a grocery seller.

Huor Mengvang, deputy chief of Meanchey district police, identified the woman as Al-Husayh Hassan, 61.

Mr Mengvang said she was arrested after ransacking a desk full of cash at a grocery shop in Chak Angrekrom commune.

He said the woman presented a $50 banknote to pay for some drinks.

When the seller went to the back of her shop to get change, the suspect allegedly took $500 from the cash desk.

The seller shouted for help and neighbours wrestled with the woman and held her until police arrived.

“She was caught red-handed,” said Mr Mengvang.  “She still had the $500 on her, which we confiscated and returned to the victim.”
