Cambodian education officials joined European diplomats last Monday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the European Union’s Erasmus education and training programme.

The highly successful programme was celebrated for the opportunities it has given to many people to study and conduct research.

Attending the event at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Centre were Education, Youth and Sport Minister Hang Chuon Naron, and the charge d’affaires of the EU Delegation to Cambodia.

Also present were representatives of EU member states and an assortment of vice rectors, deans, academic staff, and students of both public and private universities in Phnom Penh and Battambang.

“This event’s purpose is disseminating knowledge opportunities. Also, when this programme is well known [in Cambodia], many people such as students and scholars will benefit from it,” said Dr Genoveva Hernandez Uriz, representing the EU delegation.

“Since we started cooperating with Cambodia, every year the programme has selected about 50 people, but last year 59 students won scholarships to study abroad. “We are still accepting applications for this year’s programme,” Dr Hernandez Uriz said. The number of students differs from year to year depending on the number of successful applications, the diplomat added.

Most of the successful applicants benefit from the programme’s International Credit Mobility grants.
