A former deputy governor of Santhuk district in Kampong Thom province was arrested and charged yesterday with cheating a businesswoman out of more than $2 million in a land deal.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court sent Im Chhorn, 43, to be detained in Prey Sar prison.
Bun Visal, a police officer with the municipal minor crimes unit in Phnom Penh, said Mr Chhorn was arrested on Thursday after a complaint by businesswoman Hun Sengny.
Ms Sengny said that between 2015 and 2016, Mr Chhorn took more than $2 million from her to prepare and buy 1,500 hectares from farmers in Sathuk district in Kampong Thom province.
Mr Chhorn had promised to prepare all land documents, including titles, for Ms Sengny. He allegedly promised to hand over the documents at the end of 2016, but failed to do so as set out in the contract.
Ms Sengny said she asked him for the titles, but he often sought delays.
She added that she lost trust in him and filed the lawsuit with the municipal court.
