A Lao man was arrested for smuggling five kilos of crystal methamphetamine over the Cambodian-Laos border in Stung Treng province on Saturday afternoon.
Officers from the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug unit and provincial police teamed up in the operation to capture Ly Cheutaly, 22, who is accused of being a drug ringleader.
Interior Ministry drug chief Yin Panharith said the suspect was caught red-handed in Samaky commune, Stung Treng city.
“The suspect was a drug ringleader who had brought drugs from Laos for sale in Stung Treng province before,” he said.
He added that after the suspect’s arrest, police seized five big packages of crystal methamphetamine weighing more than one kilo each.
Seng Sarun, an officer with Stung Treng police, said the suspect had been temporarily detained for questioning at provincial police headquarters.
“He has been preliminarily accused of drug transport and trafficking. According to the amount of drugs seized, he faces a life sentence if convicted,” he said.
The suspect will appear in provincial court today.
