Phnom Penh police arrested a man on Monday who was allegedly attempting to extort money from his ex-girlfriend by threatening to release pornographic pictures and videos of her.

Ly Sarith, an officer with the municipal major crimes unit in Phnom Penh, identified the suspect as Morm Pheaktra, 21.

Mr Sarith said the court has already charged the man with blackmail over the scheme, in which he was requesting $500 from his former lover in exchange for deleting the video clips and pictures.

Mr Sarith said the suspect’s former girlfriend filed a complaint over the attempted extortion, which led to his arrest.

According to the victim, she met the suspect through Facebook and began a relationship. Once they began having sex, he took pictures and videos with his phone, telling her he wanted to keep them as “memories”.

But his motives changed once they broke up in early July, Mr Sarith said.

“He got angry at the victim for not loving him,” he said. “He then threatened to post the sexual videos and nude photos on his Facebook account. He demanded she pay $500 in exchange for deleting the clips and photos.”

“The victim did not have money to pay him,” Mr Sarith added. “So she filed the lawsuit against him to our police for intervention.”

Mr Pheaktra faces two to five years in prison if convicted.
