The National Tennis Series 2020 is back after being sidelined by the coronavirus outbreak.

This event which is among Cambodia’s leading tennis tournaments, was temporarily stopped a few months ago after the pandemic hit the Kingdom.

The tournament, which is also known as Decathlon Tennis Series of Cambodia, features the Junior and Open Series, which are held every month.

The tournament organisers were able to stage this year’s first Junior Series from March 15 to 16. The companion Open Series was supposed to follow a few days later, but was caught up in the coronavirus mess, which forced the cancellation or postponement of most sports activities in the Kingdom.

“We are pleased to announce The National Tennis Series 2020 will continue this month. In February we had ceased all activities due to Covid-19 and were only able to carry out our Junior tournament,” a post on the tournament’s Facebook page read.

The first Open Series for this year will be held on June 27 and 28 at the Cambodian Country Club (CCC), followed by another series of competitions on July 18 and 19, August 22 and 23 and September 19 and 20.

The Junior Series, meanwhile, will have its second tournament on July 11 and 12, followed by the third on Aug 15 and 16 and fourth on Sept 12 and 13.

The National Tennis Series started last year. The tournament is intended to promote and develop tennis in the Kingdom. One of its missions is to support the Junior Tennis Development Programme, which has expanded exponentially with interest in the sport growing by the year.

“With a growing Junior Development Programme it only makes sense to work to provide more competition for our juniors, as performance is one of the federation’s target areas for improvement,” Phalkun Mam, Tennis Cambodia technical director, told the local media during the tournament’s launching last year.

Participants include many National Team members and some of the top tennis players in the Kingdom.

The Open Series welcomes both men and women aged 14 and above. The winners receive $100 cash prize, while $50 goes to the runners-up. There is a $15 registration fee.

The Junior Series, meanwhile, is open to boys and girls and is played under several categories (under 10, 12, 14 and 16). Prizes and medals await the winners in all categories. Registration fee is pegged at $10.

The National Tennis Series is principally sponsored by Decathlon, a leading supplier and seller of sporting goods in the Kingdom, and is supported by Tennis Cambodia, Pharmacie de la Gare, Pontoon, CCC, TC4KS and others.
